🌈Major Pride Announcement🌈
We are elated and honored to announce our guest speaker for JOMO PrideFest 2021 on Aug. 28th & 29th, Sara Cunningham; author, activist and founder of the national organization Free Mom Hugs "Sara Cunningham's journey is a surprising one that began in conservative Oklahoma, when her son, Parker, came out as gay. As a woman of faith, Sara wrestled with the news until she began to study, research, and reconcile the two worlds. This journey resulted in her book How We Sleep at Night. She found herself on a journey “from the church to the Pride parade,” falling in love with the LGBTQIA+ community. In the wake of beautiful glitter-covered hugs and heart-breaking horror stories, the mission of Free Mom Hugs began. Simple acts of love and acceptance turned into a viral sensation, and Sara knew she had the opportunity to lead impactful change. Free Mom Hugs is now a movement across the country and the world. Sara goes Beyond the Hug to educate and advocate organizations of all types including schools and businesses striving for safe and protected spaces. She has appeared, many times with her son Parker, on the Today show and The RuPaul Show and spoke at the 2019 GLAAD Awards. She also has been featured in many national publications including The Washington Post, Woman’s Day magazine, and People magazine. Sara is currently in partnership with Jamie Lee Curtis, who has purchased the rights to her book and will release a movie based on her story. An upcoming documentary about the Mama Bears movement by award winning director Daresha Kyi also features Sara and the Free Mom Hugs movement. Sara’s passion is to change the perspective of the outside world toward this beautiful part of our community so that we as a society, not only learn to affirm, but more importantly, celebrate. Her goal is to help parents and children have authentic relationships and understanding for each other using her own experience and education as a guide. Sara is passionate about connecting with faith, civic, and business leaders in efforts to make the world a kinder, safer place for our LGBTQIA+ family. She is gifted at inspiring others to join her in this movement that is sweeping the nation and the world." #JOMOpride #SaraCunningham #Joplin #FreeMomHugs #VisitJoplinMO #ChooseJoplin Joplin Arts District #PrideFest miss gay america, pattaya hart, coming to joplin🌈Pride Announcement🌈 The suspense has been killing us! - JOMO Pride Inc Staff Congratulations to the following community members who were nominated and elected to serve 2 year terms as Board members of JOMO Pride Inc:
Co-Chair - Jaclyn Shepherd Co-Chair - Ron Burch Secretary - Carey Prater Entertainment Director - Victoria Kennedy Asst. Entertainment Director - Misty Meanor Treasurer - Larry Mcghee Vendor Director - Jarrett Shapp Sponsorship Director - Johnny Pulido Volunteer Director - Ashley Benson Marketing Director - Joshua Hopper At-Large Board member - Jason Stevens Youth Liaison - Reese Prater JOMO Pride Inc. & Blackthorn Pizza & Pub are teaming up during Pride Month, on June 25th, for a FREE Community Viewing of Stonewall Uprising!
"When police raided the Stonewall Inn, a popular gay bar in the Greenwich Village section of New York City on June 28th, 1969, the street erupted into violent protests that lasted for the next 6 days. The Stonewall Riots, as they came to be known, marked a major turning point in the modern gay civil rights movement in the United States and around the world." Due to continued issues surrounding COVID-19 we ask all attendees to practice safe social distancing guidelines when possible, and are encouraged to protect the high risk members of our community through the use of facial coverings. Friends, Allies and Supporters,
With continued regulations on large scale events, social distancing guidelines and the concern for the safety of our community and attendees, the Board of Directors has made the difficult decision not to have an in-person Pride. It may not be feasible nor safe to proceed with our planned event due to COVID-19, but the Board is working diligently on ways we can still come together and celebrate Pride as a community, whether by virtual or other non traditional means. We will be keeping the same dates of August 29th and 30th. While some of these restrictions may be lifted later this Summer, JOMO PrideFest was expected to bring over 3,000+ attendees from as far as 250+ miles away. While most other Pride celebrations in the Midwest have cancelled or postponed, we felt continuing with our in-person event could pose a significant risk to our community due to the influx of attendees from major city hubs across the 4-State Region. While the board works towards ways to provide a safe alternative to the in-person event in August, in the meantime, Jomo Pride Inc encourages the community to "Show your Pride" through the rest of Pride month and beyond by decorating your houses, businesses and yourselves and posting pictures online, tagging us using the hashtag #JOMOpride and sharing YOUR pride! Please watch our page and visit our website for further updates and announcements. Jomopride.org "Our Community, For Equality" #JOMOpride2020 #Joplin #COVID19 #VirtualPride #LGBTQ
Due to the health and safety of our community during the COVID-19 outbreak our meeting on March 22nd has been postponed until April 5th at 6pm at which time we will have a Board member conference call and will reassess in person meetings based on current information available from local state and federal health and government officials. Our agenda will be posted publicly 72 hours before the teleconference and minutes will be available online afterwards.
The health and safety of our community is most important and we urge fellow community members to take precautions and recommendations set forth by officials to minimize the spread of the virus to vulnerable parts of our communities. At this time our Drag Show Fundraiser scheduled for May 9th is still on, but we are watching the situation closely and will follow whatever recommendations are set forth at that time and will update the public of any further announcements or decisions. Thank you for your understanding and patience during this time. . Check out our different sponsorship options and find the best fit for you! Our Corporate Sponsorshop slot is currently sold out thanks to our friends at Bodegas, but we still have other PrideFest sponsorships levels available. Spots are limited and won't last through the spring, so act fast!
